In the world of mobile operating systems, there are two major players: iOS and Android. In order to ensure that all mobile users have the most comprehensive mobile experience possible, they both provide a feature called "emojis." While these little guys might seem like nothing more than unintelligible squiggles, there is actually a lengthy process behind their manufacturing. To understand how emojis are made, you must first understand what they actually are. Emoji is an ideogram that represents any idea or emotion with an icon representation. They can be used in text messages and on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to show feelings like happiness or sadness. Most emojis are created by the Unicode Consortium, which is a nonprofit corporation that keeps track of all diverse and international character sets, including emojis. Before an emoji is made available to the public (which is achieved through a downloadable keyboard), it must first go through a series of committees, or working groups. These groups decide on what the face will look like and what kind of emotions it should portray. Then, they submit their proposals to be voted on by other members of the organization who decide if each candidate should be incorporated as an official emoji. If more than one proposal for an emoji exists, one is selected at random in order to maintain consistency. The winning proposal is then added to the Unicode Standard and is ready for mass production and use. The emoji faces themselves are designed based on actual faces that have been found across cultures and societies. That means that even if you've never read Emoji, the movie, you probably already know what a smiling emoji looks like. Post-production is the process of adding color and detail to an otherwise unfinished design, such as a font or a logo. In the case of emojis, this involves creating colors for each unique face. Each one is assigned a unique code which interprets into a certain shade. Then the emoji is rendered in the right color with enough detail to be recognizable, but not so much that it overwhelms its surroundings. This is especially important when the emoji appears on a white background, which may not occur frequently. The official emojis of today are based off of older ones that were popular, but were eventually phased out or changed for some reason. So what does this mean for the future of emojis? According to an article published in ABC News, there are two new faces that are slated to become part of the standard emoji set. One is a black woman with an afro and glasses while her hair blows in the wind. The other is a fist face on fire while green flames surround it. Although emojis are a very small part of the mobile operating system, they are still an important tool used every day. 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_Emoji_Standard2. http://unicode-emoji-standard.com/3. https://www.motorola-global-portal. cfa1e77820
